Are you planning to make France your long-term home? If so, it’s time to pick up the pace with your French studies!
The French government has officially increased the language proficiency requirements for various residency permits and naturalization. These changes mean that "getting by" with basic phrases is no longer enough to secure your legal status in the country.
At The Language Hive, we are committed to helping you navigate these transitions smoothly. Here is a breakdown of the new requirements and what they mean for you:
1. French Citizenship (Naturalization)
The Change: Increased to B2 (Upper-Intermediate).
Previous Requirement: B1.
What this means: To become a French citizen, you now need to demonstrate a higher level of fluency. A B2 level means you can understand the main ideas of complex text, interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers, and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.
2. 10-Year Residence Card (Carte de Résident)
The Change: Increased to B1 (Intermediate).
Previous Requirement: A2.
What this means: For those applying for the long-term 10-year residency, the bar has been raised from "basic" to "independent" user. You must now be able to maintain a conversation, express opinions, and deal with situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
3. Multi-Year Residence Permits (Carte de Séjour Pluriannuelle)
The Change: Now requires A2 (Basic Proficiency).
Previous Requirement: Previously, applicants only needed to show progress in learning French.
What this means: You can no longer simply show "effort." You must now pass a formal assessment to prove you have reached the A2 level, which involves understanding frequently used expressions and communicating in simple, routine tasks.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!
Language learning takes time, and jumping from one CEFR level to the next (e.g., from B1 to B2) requires consistent practice and expert guidance.
How The Language Hive can help:
Targeted Exam Prep: We offer specialized courses designed specifically for the TCF and DELF/DALF exams required by the French authorities.
Level-Specific Classes: Whether you are starting at A1 or aiming for the new B2 requirement, we have a curriculum tailored to your needs.

Your future in France depends on your ability to communicate. Let us help you reach your goals and secure your residency or citizenship with confidence.
